This was our second project and it was funded by Rise Up Together with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Having gone through the Enabling Girls to Advance Gender Equality (ENGAGE) advocacy workshops, we were awarded 9,000 USD in 2018 to implement a one-year project.
We went around the communities of T/A Mchilamwera engaging community leaders, mother groups and young people, advocating for eradication of child marriages. We advocated for promotion of access to the Youth friendly Health Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Services and information to avoid unwanted pregnancies that lead to child marriages. We also advocated to end negative attitude that is associated with SRHR.
We signed an MOU with 10 group village headmen to end child marriages in their community.
Together with the community leaders we abolished over 109 child marriages.
Over 150 girls were integrated into school.
We also signed an MOU with Youth friendly health providers at Thyolo DHO
We also contributed to the increase of family planning services accessibility, moving it from number 9 to number 3 as the most accessed service.
Over 500 young people were trained on Comprehensive Sexual Education, Advocacy and peer education.
